About the Ecosystem Profile Explorer

The Ecosystem Profile Explorer is designed to provide users with a single, integrated view of the data produced by the Census of Environment (CoE). Users can select a geography and learn about the ecosystem extent, conditions and services connected to that geography. Data tables for the chosen geography appear beneath the map, displaying data for the five most recent time periods. A link to the original data tables is provided below the data table so users can access the full set of data available on that subject.

Statistics Canada's CoE is designed to track the size and health of ecosystems such as forests, mountains, prairies, tundra, lakes and rivers, ocean and coastal areas, as well as cities and towns. It also provides measures of ecosystem services such as food, clean air, clean water, carbon storage, natural disaster mitigation, wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities. In this way, information about the value of ecosystems and how ecosystems benefit the economy and well-being are made accessible to all.

The goal of the CoE is to deliver a full picture of the complex relationships between ecosystems, the economy, society, and human well-being in one easily accessible location.

• Select a geographic layer (required) from the layers. For a definition for each geography, hover the mouse over the main layer name.

• Add an interactive layer (optional). These layers provide more information on the geography the user has selected.

• To see the data associated with a specific geography, click on the area of the map to highlight the area (outlined in blue) or use the search box (Find a place and locate on the map) to find the location. Note that correct punctuation and name must be entered in the search box, otherwise the search may not work. The associated data tables will be available below the map, organized by subject. Click on the subject title to expand the table to see the data. The data tables will include the five most recent time periods included in the source data. Consult the source data, linked below the data table, to view the complete data set.

• Quick facts about the selected area will appear in a text box.

• To export the data use the icons located next to the text "Export Data" found to the right of and above the data table.

• Copy to clipboard

  Copy the table contents to the clipboard.

• Export to csv

  Export the table contents to a comma-separated values (csv) file.

• Colour indicates the location does not have any available quick facts or table statistics.

• Zoom in

  Zoom in on the map.

• Zoom out

  Zoom out on the map.

• Enter fullscreen

  Make the map fullscreen. Press the Esc key to exit fullscreen mode.

• Exit fullscreen

  Exit fullscreen mode.

• Initial map view

  View all of Canada on the map.

• Basemaps

  Change the basemap.
